LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Long Beach police say officers fatally shot a man who charged at them with a knife during a standoff.
Officials say in a statement that police received a call late Sunday from a man who said he was armed with a handgun and wanted to commit “suicide by cop.”
Arriving officers couldn’t find the man but a helicopter crew spotted him and determined he was carrying something.
The statement says as officers, including a mental-evaluation officer, were adjusting their position to better negotiate with the man, he charged at them.
That’s when officers opened fire, striking the man. He died at the scene. He has not been identified.
No officers were hurt.
