The Washington Nationals recalled top prospect Lucas Giolito and infielder Wilmer Difo on Tuesday, adding two more players to their active roster.

The two could not join the major league club until Tuesday because they were sent to the minors less than 10 days before Sept. 1, forcing them to wait until Triple-A Syracuse’s season ended Monday to return to the majors.

Giolito has a chance to be back on the mound quickly. Washington has not announced a starter for Wednesday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves. Stephen Strasburg (elbow soreness) may come off the disabled list to make that start. If not, Giolito and A.J. Cole would be options.

Giolito’s prior major league starts have not gone well. The Nationals’ No. 1 prospect has a 5.62 ERA in four starts.

Difo provides the Nationals more infield depth. Manager Dusty Baker has been searching for a way to give third baseman Anthony Rendon a day off. Rendon and shortstop Danny Espinosa lead the team in games played.
