WASHINGTON (AP) - A company that operates several low-income housing complexes in Washington is facing potential fines of more than half a million dollars for more than 1,000 code violations.

Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered the inspections after local media reports about Sanford Capital, which manages at least 18 apartment complexes.

District officials gave Sanford, which has received millions in taxpayer subsidies, one week to fix problems, instead of the standard 30 days, before fines are issued. Sanford’s administrative court challenge to the violations must be resolved before citations can be issued.

An attorney for Sanford would not comment on pending litigation but told The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/2nuHjVP ) the company is hoping to resolve the matter.

The recent inspections did not include two Sanford properties that already are the subject of lawsuits
