ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been charged with killing his 71-year-old mother more than five years after she was strangled and beaten in her apartment.

Court records show 52-year-old John Wesley Coker was indicted on a murder charge in February.

Authorities say Coker called police in July 2011 after finding his mother’s body in her Anderson apartment. The coroner says Linda Clark was choked to death and had injuries to her face.

Former Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper told the Anderson Independent-Mail ( ) Coker was always a suspect, but investigators needed more evidence because it was too easy to explain why his fingerprints were in the home.

Skipper and other investigators refused to detail the evidence that led to Coker’s murder charge. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
