FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A nonprofit environmental group says the threat of damage from fracking puts the Rappahannock among the 10 most threatened rivers in the U.S.

American Rivers ranked the Rappahannock No. 5 on its 2017 Most Endangered Rivers report. No other Virginia rivers are on the list released Tuesday.

The report points to energy company Shore Exploration & Production’s leasing of tens of thousands of acres south and east of Fredericksburg with the intention of drilling for natural gas.

Company president Stanley Sherrill says the company hasn’t yet applied for the necessary state permits to begin drilling. He says natural gas prices have fallen since the leases were first acquired and the company is assessing how to proceed.

Sherrill says any fracking the company might conduct will be protective of the environment.
