Here’s one for the Europeans-make-strange-TV-shows file.

Entertainment Weekly (EW) reported Wednesday that a Dutch game show recently asked contestants to guess whether a female contestant was pregnant or simply, well, a little chubby.

That was the question posed on Sunday’s edition of “Neem Je Zwemspullen Mee” (“Bring Your Bathing Suit”), sparking criticism on social media, with some Dutch viewers complaining that their tax dollars subsidized the program on the public broadcasting channel NPO 3.

EW notes that this is hardly the first time the program transgressed the bounds of polite discourse. “Last year’s pilot contained a sequence where contestants had to guess if a man was Japanese or Chinese,” the entertainment news magazine explained.

The Daily Telegraph reports that producers for the show defended their edgy comedy in a statement saying that “the satirical setting is a way to laugh off all kinds of prejudices.”
