CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A New York City man has been sentenced for taking a friend away from a Long Island crash scene where the friend had just caused the deaths of a man and his two children.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2oyaIBC ) 24-year-old Demetri Stewart of Queens was sentenced Tuesday in a Suffolk County court to one to three years in prison. He pleaded guilty last month to leaving the scene of a fatal accident and hindering prosecution.

Prosecutors say Stewart’s friend, 26-year-old Oniel Sharpe Jr., was driving drunk on the Southern State Parkway in July 2015 when he rear-ended a vehicle carrying a Queens couple and their two children, ages 4 and 8. The family’s vehicle exploded, killing the husband and the children.

Sharpe was found guilty in February of aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter.
