FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - One of two young women who fell into a central California river while hiking with friends has died.

Authorities continue to search for the other woman, said Tulare County sheriff’s spokeswoman Teresa Douglass.

The two women were on a day hike Thursday with friends in the Sequoia National Forest when one person slipped into the Tule River, she said.

The other woman went in to help her out.

It’s unclear if the woman who died was the person who slipped or who went in to help. Douglass said the woman who died was pulled from the river by helicopter.

The women are in their 20s.

The office received the call for help around 10 a.m.

The search area is about 104 miles (167 kilometers) southeast of Fresno.
