BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a correctional officer has been stabbed by an inmate at a correctional facility near Birmingham.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/2oagrK6) that the stabbing happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in the Bessemer area.

Al.com reports that the officer was attacked while responding to an emergency call of an inmate trying to flee from officers in the facility.

The officer was taken to a Birmingham hospital, where he was in stable condition.

The maximum security prison facility, which holds more than 1,400 inmates, was placed on lockdown while the Alabama Department of Corrections investigated.
