EL PASO, Texas (AP) - An El Paso police officer has been indicted in the 2015 death of a man who was shot in the back while at his mother’s home.

The El Paso Times reports (https://bit.ly/2pwgFQA ) the indictment of officer Mando Kenneth Gomez appears to be the first in El Paso involving an on-duty shooting.

The 37-year-old Gomez was indicted on a charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of Erik Emmanuel Salas-Sanchez.

Officers were responding to a burglary call in April 2015 when they found Salas-Sanchez inside the home. Police said at the time that he was holding a metal object when he charged at officers.

Gomez has posted bond and he’s assigned as a police training specialist as his case is adjudicated.

His attorney did not return a message Tuesday seeking comment.
