MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama House Speaker Joseph C. McCorquodale has died.

The governor’s office and House of Representatives announced the death this week. He died Monday at the age of 96.

McCorquodale, a native of Clarke County, was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives for 24 years. He was House speaker from 1975 to 1983.

McCorquodale ran for governor in 1982 but lost to George C. Wallace.

Gov. Kay Ivey, who was a young House reading clerk when McCorquodale was speaker, says he set a high bar for honest leadership. Ivey says McCorquodale gave the advice to never lie, because, “if you tell one lie, you’ll forget and will tell another.”

McCorquodale was also a veteran of World War II.
