BONSACK, Va. (AP) - Officials say a 53-year-old worker was killed during a demolition project in Roanoke County.

Concord-based W.E.L. Incorporated said in a statement that 53-year-old Charles McFadden of Appomattox was working on the project in Bonsack Thursday when he was killed in what the company called “an unfortunate, and tragic, industrial accident.”

The News & Advance reports emergency responders were called for a report of a commercial structure collapse around 11:15 a.m. Thursday. One person was transported from the scene.

The company’s statement said it is conducting an internal investigation. The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry’s Occupational Safety and Health division is also investigating.

McFadden was a nine-year employee of the company, which provides disaster and environmental response services along with demolition services.
