QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (AP) - The mother of an 8-year-old California girl killed last year in a boat collision on an upstate New York has given emotional testimony at the trial of the man charged with causing the accident.

Courtney McCue cried during her testimony Monday in a Warren County court. Her family from Carlsbad, California, was in a relative’s boat on Lake George on the night of July 25 when they were hit by another vessel.

McCue said her daughter Charlotte was sleeping with her head on her mother’s lap when the second boat drove over their boat. Authorities say the girl was killed instantly.

Police later charged 24-year-old Alexander West, of Lake George, with manslaughter. Authorities say he didn’t stop after the crash and instead docked his boat nearby. He eventually went home without reporting the accident.

Testimony resumes Tuesday.
