NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A police captain accused of trying to run down her boyfriend and striking his car three times after he broke up with her via email has been acquitted of two weapons counts.

A jury deliberated for about 90 minutes on Tuesday before finding Monique Smith not guilty.

Prosecutors said the 46-year-old Irvington police captain used her car as a weapon when she twice rear-ended the man’s car and sideswiped it once as she drove after him in a bid to confront him over the breakup. Her attorney argued that her actions weren’t criminal.

Smith was suspended after her arrest in January 2015. It wasn’t clear Tuesday if or when she would seek reinstatement.

Smith still faces a disorderly persons offense and two motor vehicle charges.
