PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A restaurant owner accused of bribing former Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has pleaded no contest and must serve one year behind bars.

Raymond Hugh entered the plea Wednesday in Providence Superior Court to one count of bribing a public official. He was sentenced to three years in prison, with two of those years suspended with probation. His lawyer says he was immediately taken into custody.

Hugh was accused of paying Fox more than $50,000 in 2008 to ensure his restaurant near Brown University got a liquor license.

At the time, Fox, a Democrat, was House majority leader and sat on the Providence board of licenses.

Fox is in federal prison after admitting he took bribes to help push through the license amid opposition by neighbors, including the university.
