BLOUNTS CREEK, N.C. (AP) - A woman has been charged with 27 counts of animal cruelty after 27 dogs were found caged in her home last month.

WITN-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2ouWK4N) that Julianne Harris was arrested Tuesday. Beaufort County Animal Control Chief Billy Lassiter says the dogs were penned up for 23 hours a day and at least three may have been stolen.

Officers found the dogs after obtaining a search warrant upon a neighbor’s report of two missing dogs. It’s unclear if the neighbor’s dogs were found in Harris‘ home.

Harris said when the investigation began that she worked to rescue dogs and reunite them with their owners. It’s unclear if she has a lawyer.
