NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Newport News man attempted to elude officials by jumping off his second-story apartment deck.

News outlets report 24-year-old Lasrenzo Schmidt was arrested Wednesday after a six-week investigation by U.S. Marshals and Norfolk fugitive investigators.

He was arrested in connection to a January burglary of a Metro PCS store and charged with multiple offenses including conspiracy to commit robbery and possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Chris Leuer says in a news release that Schmidt jumped off the deck of the apartment and nearly landed on a deputy marshal.

Officials say Schmidt landed on a grassy area that cushioned his fall. It didn’t appear that he was injured. It’s unclear if Schmidt has an attorney.
