LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A Lexington councilwoman has been indicted on multiple felony charges related to her former position as the general manager of a Lexington hotel.

News outlets report that a Fayette Circuit grand jury indicted 34-year-old Sasha Love Higgins with identify theft, forgery and three counts of theft by deception on Tuesday. Higgins is accused of issuing and cashing payroll checks in the name of a former Hampton Inn employee. The gross amount of the seven checks was $5,709.88, which became $4,226.33 after taxes.

Higgins‘ attorney Fred Peters says the money was used to pay contract employees and there was no intent to deprive anyone. He says Higgins intends to plead not guilty and hasn’t made a decision about resigning from the council.

She was elected in November.
