LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities have identified a 25-day-old baby who was killed by gunshots fired into a car with his father in the front seat at an apartment complex in a Las Vegas suburb.
The Clark County coroner on Monday identified the infant as Marcus Cleveland Thomas Jr. and said the shooting late Saturday in North Las Vegas was a homicide.
The boy’s 22-year-old father, Marcus Thomas, was wounded in the front passenger seat when the four-door Chrysler was peppered with bullets, while police said the child’s 19-year-old mother and two other children, ages 4 and 2, escaped injury.
The father was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he was reported Sunday to be in stable condition. He was later released, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.
Police have not determined a motive for the shooting, but they believe it was not random or sparked by road rage, North Las Vegas police Officer Aaron Patty said.
The mother was driving, and Patty said she headed for a hospital before running a red light and crashing into another vehicle. The driver of that car wasn’t hurt.
The mother wept during an impromptu memorial that drew about 30 people on Sunday near where the crash occurred. She declined to speak publicly about her son, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported (https://bit.ly/2nUjqJQ).
The woman has not been identified by police, and she did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press.
