HONOLULU (AP) - Authorities on the Big Island say an officer has shot and killed a man carrying a loaded crossbow in the community of Papaaloa.

The Hawaii Police Department says in a news release officers were responding to a disturbance call at a home Saturday afternoon when they encountered the man.

One officer fired several shots, killing him.

The man has not yet been identified.

It is still unclear what prompted the officer to open fire.

The shooting remains under investigation.
