EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a shooting involving an off-duty police officer has left one man dead and another wounded.

Essex County prosecutors say the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday in East Orange and that the officer fired the fatal shot. But they declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

It’s not known what may have sparked the shooting. Authorities say the officer - who serves with the Jersey City police force - was not injured in the shooting, but his name has not been released.

A city spokeswoman says the officer remains on active duty.

The names of the two men shot and further details on their injuries have not been disclosed.
