MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is rejecting calls from a coalition of prominent business leaders who are pressuring the Legislature to ignore Gov. Scott Walker’s call to halt work on the Interstate 94 east-west project.

Vos issued a statement Wednesday saying work will not continue on that 3.5-mile portion of I-94 between the Marquette and Zoo interchanges unless work on I-94 south of Milwaukee stays on track.

The back and forth shows the difficulty the Republican-controlled Legislature faces as it considers delaying highway work as part of a solution for plugging a nearly $1 billion roads budget shortfall.

Business leaders including MillerCoors, Palermo’s Pizza, the Forest County Potawatomi and Marquette University sent a letter to co-chairs of the Legislature’s budget committee on Tuesday. They urged lawmakers not to halt work on the east-west project as Walker proposed.
