WARRENSBURG, Mo. (AP) - A Warrensburg man who is a retired Air Force pilot, small business owner and assistant dean at the University of Central Missouri plans to seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Tony Monetti, executive director of Central Missouri’s airport, said Thursday he will officially file for the race in February. The Warrensburg Daily Star-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2oJLaSL ) Monetti announced his intention to run Thursday while in Washington D.C. meeting with members of Congress.

Some conservative Republican groups, such as the National Rifle Association, have already targeted McCaskill for defeat in the 2018 election.

Among other Republicans considering a Senate bid is U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner of suburban St. Louis, a former ambassador to Luxembourg under President George W. Bush.
