WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Authorities say six people were rescued after several kayaks capsized during a boat race in the York River.

Emergency crews were called about 9:40 a.m. Saturday after an adventure racing group reported several kayaks overturned near Croaker Landing.

A rescue boat pulled three people from the water near the boat ramp, and a medical helicopter located three more people in the water, guiding rescue crews to them. Three people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Several other members of the racing group were found stranded in various remote locations along the river and all were eventually accounted for.

Authorities say the group was participating in a combined bicycling, boating and orienteering event, the release stated.
