WYNOT, Neb. (AP) - A small community in Nebraska’s Cedar County is seeing a surge in building homes and renovations that are unusual to many other small towns in the state.

At least six new homes have been built and another six remodeled for new owners, compared to the previous 20 years when one or two houses at most had been built.

“We have a lot of people who want to move back here,” Wynot native Steve Wieseler said. “It’s their home, and some are even moving here with young families.”

When Wieseler discovered that Wynot’s former Methodist church was for sale, he reached out to contractor Jody Koch, the Norfolk Daily News (https://bit.ly/2ohalvp ) reported.

“As I talked, I realized this building was an important historical part of Wynot and the ownership should remain in town,” Wieseler said.

He and Koch won the bidding for the 1920 brick church that’s been vacant for the past 40 years. Wieseler, his sons and Koch gutted the church this winter with plans to turn it into two apartments.

“This old building has good bones,” Koch said. “The foundation is good and we are very optimistic about filling it up.”

Koch added that there’s already been strong interest in the apartments, prompting the two to try and step up the renovation process.

He said the two hope to have the apartments ready by this fall.

“You know, there seems to be a sense of opportunity in town,” Wieseler said.
