HAMILTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend inside their apartment is facing murder and weapons charges.

Mercer County prosecutors said Monday that they will seek to have 38-year-old Hamilton resident Daniel Torres Jr. detained until his trial. He’s charged in the death of 31-year-old Jennifer Beer, who was shot multiple times.

Hamilton police had responded to the second-floor apartment around 6 a.m. Sunday and upon arrival heard a gunshot. They forced entry and quickly detained Torres, then soon found a wounded Beer and a dead dog on the floor of a bedroom.

Beer was pronounced dead there a short time later.

Authorities haven’t said how the dog died. But they say Torres will face an animal cruelty charge.

It wasn’t known Monday if he’s retained an attorney.
