Man fatally shot by police officer in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a man was shot and killed by a police officer in Salt Lake City.

Police said the shots were fired Sunday night after the man produced a weapon while three officers were talking with him on State Street.

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer says the officers unsuccessful tried de-escalation tactics before one officer fired.

The victim was described as an African-American man. He was not immediately identified.

Unified Police are investigating what led up to the shooting.
