PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police have released the name of a man they say was shot and killed after grabbing the guns of two officers investigating a report of an attempted car theft in Philadelphia.

Authorities say they responded to the theft report around 5 p.m. Friday to find 31-year-old Tyreas Carlyle sitting in the driver’s seat of a car that reportedly belongs to someone else in the Fairhill neighborhood.

As an officer approached Carlyle, a struggle ensued and police said Carlyle tried to pull the policeman’s firearm out of his holster.

Police say two other officers arrived during the scuffle and ordered Carlyle to stop. They say Carlyle then grabbed another officer’s gun and that’s when they opened fire. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No other injuries were reported.
