CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago man has been ordered to pay restitution and seek mental-health treatment for vandalizing a synagogue in the city’s Loop business district last February.

Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, 32-year-old Stuart Wright was also sentenced to the two days he has already served in jail. He was charged with putting swastika stickers on the front door of the Chicago Loop Synagogue and smashing a window.

Defense attorney Michael Byrne tells the Chicago Sun-Times that Wright is mentally ill and says the vandalism wasn’t a hate crime. Court records say Wright must pay restitution of $4,500 and treatment for his diagnosed schizophrenia.

Police said Wright was arrested with the help of information provided to a department tip line after surveillance video of the incident was released.
