JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A Kodiak state senator’s decision to run for lieutenant governor has prompted changes in legislative committee assignments.

Sen. Bert Stedman of Sitka is replacing Sen. Gary Stevens of Kodiak as chairman of the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee. Sen. Cathy Giessel of Anchorage is replacing Stevens on the Legislative Council.

The Republican-led Senate majority, in a release, says legislators cannot serve on either committee if they file to run for an elective office outside of the state House or Senate.

The majority says Stevens stepped down from the committee roles after announcing his candidacy for lieutenant governor.

Former state Rep. Lynn Gattis has filed a letter of intent to run for lieutenant governor next year. She is also a Republican.
