BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. (AP) - The Latest on a wrong-way crash on Interstate 17 (all times local):

8:30 a.m.

Authorities say passers-by pulled a wrong-way driver and three other injured people from two vehicles after a head-on crash that partially closed Interstate 17 in a rural of area of north-central Arizona for several hours.

Spokesman Raul Garcia of the state Department of Public Safety says both vehicles were on fire when troopers who had been responding to a report of a wrong-way driver arrived at the crash scene north of Black Canyon City early Tuesday morning.

Garcia says the wrong-way driver and three people who were in a second vehicle were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. Injury details and conditions weren’t released.

Garcia says cause of the wreck on southbound I-17 near the Sunset Point Rest Area is under investigation and that impairment hasn’t been ruled out.

6:45 a.m.

Authorities say a wrong-way driver and three people in another vehicle were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Interstate 17 in a rural area of north-central Arizona.

The wreck occurred at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, closing southbound I-17 near the Sunset Point Rest Area north of Black Canyon City and causing a large backup of traffic. The freeway was reopened at about 6:30 a.m.

The state Department of Public Safety says the injured were transported by air and ground ambulances to Phoenix hospitals. Details on their injuries and conditions weren’t released.

I-17 is the main route between Phoenix and northern Arizona high country. The Arizona Department of Transportation advised drivers during the closure to consider delaying their travel or using alternate routes through Payson and Wickenburg.

Southbound Interstate 17 is closed north of Black Canyon City in a rural area of north-central Arizona following a wrong-way crash that authorities say injured at least four people.

The Daisy Mountain Fire Department says four people were transported by helicopter and ambulance after the wreck early Tuesday morning.

Crews are cleaning up the accident scene at the Sunset Point Rest Area several miles north of Black Canyon City, which is 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Phoenix.

Additional information isn’t immediately available.

I-17 is the main route between Phoenix and northern Arizona high country. The Arizona Department of Transportation advised drivers to consider delaying their travel or using alternate routes through Payson and Wickenburg.
