CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina say a carjacking suspect may have drowned while running from officers toward a creek.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Major Gerald Smith tells local news outlets that Monday evening the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of a bar before the suspects drove off with the pickup truck.

Police were able to find the stolen vehicle and a suspect red sedan in Charlotte’s Wilmore neighborhood. The sedan lead police on a chase, but eventually stopped. One suspect, 27-year-old Jerry McCorey, was arrested.

The sedan’s second occupant ran down an embankment toward Stewart Creek, where he vanished. Smith says the man is feared dead.

McCorey is charged with armed robbery and fleeing to elude police. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
