RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A board member of the American Civil Liberties of Virginia has resigned following the group’s successful effort to defend a white nationalist’s plans for a rally in Charlottesville that turned violent.
Board member Waldo Jaquith (JAKE’-with) resigned Aug. 12, after violent confrontations between white supremacists and counter-protesters. One counter-protester, Heather Heyer, was killed when she was rammed with a car.
Jaquith said in a series of tweets Aug. 12 said he resigned from the board of ACLU of Virginia because “what’s legal and what’s right are sometimes different. I won’t be a fig leaf for Nazis.”
The ACLU helped rally organizer Jason Kessler fight an effort by city officials to move his rally out of the downtown area. Gov. Terry McAuliffe cited the lawsuit as a factor in the tragedy.
