CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A suspect in the killing of a couple in North Carolina has surrendered to police.

The Charlotte Observer reports 40-year-old Vurnel Smith Jr. turned himself into Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Tuesday and will be charged with two counts of murder and one count each of rape, kidnapping, assault on a female and larceny of a vehicle. The search for Smith began after 65-year-old Jacqueline Gordon-White and 69-year-old Rufus Gordon were found dead Thursday. Warrants say they were killed July 25.

Police say the couple’s daughter was injured after Smith allegedly held her captive over several days and sexually assaulted her.

Smith was the couple’s son-in-law.

CMPD Capt. Christopher Dozier says the surviving woman “is physically going to be OK.” Police have no other suspects.

It’s unclear if Smith has a lawyer.
