DUCHESNE, Utah (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies say a missing 81-year-old Vernal man found dead in a remote area of the High Uintas Wilderness appears to have fallen 300 feet while trying to rappel down a cliff.

Duchesne County Lt. Jeremy Curry said searchers on Saturday found Joseph Weyerman dead at the bottom of the cliff after finding his sleeping bag nearby. A rescue and recovery team plans to return to the scene Sunday to remove Weyerman’s body.

Curry said in a news release that Weyerman had set up a base camp in the rugged area and had traveled back and forth over the past few weeks. He was last heard from on Monday and was expected home on Wednesday.
