HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) - Alabama authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot by police in a Birmingham suburb over the weekend.
AL.com reports that the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man on Monday as 32-year-old Thomas Justin Walton of Calera.
Homewood police Sgt. John Carr said the shooting happened early Saturday after an officer stopped to speak with a man he saw while patrolling the parking lot of a hotel.
Carr said the officer fired in self-defense after the suspect grabbed the officer’s Taser stun device and used it on the officer.
Walton was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m.
Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating at the request of Homewood and Jefferson County authorities.
