WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - A former Finance Department employee for a Rhode Island town is facing felony charges of misappropriation after police say she deposited checks made out to the town into her personal bank account.
The Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/2vY7yuq ) 57-year-old Lisa Guarnieri did not enter a plea after turning herself in to police Tuesday morning.
Westerly Police Chief Richard Silva says officers launched an investigation in July after being notified by Westerly Finance Department and school officials about possible fraudulent activities.
Silva says Guarnieri used a mobile banking application to deposit the checks, which led to $8,400 in losses. The Westerly school superintendent confirmed Tuesday that she has resigned from her position in the school department.
It is unclear if Guarnieri has an attorney. She has not responded to calls for comment.
