SPRING, Texas (AP) - A Houston-area couple has been charged with child endangerment after investigators found nine children living in squalid conditions that included trash and mold in their home.

Authorities acting on multiple calls from neighbors went to the home near Spring on Wednesday and found the children living in substandard conditions that one investigator called “deplorable.”

The Houston Chronicle reports that all nine children have been placed in foster care. The youngest is 13 months and the oldest is 10.

Fifty-three-year-old Daniel Bell and 38-year-old Sabrina Bell each is charged with criminally negligent child endangerment. They were being held Thursday at the Montgomery County jail.

Online jail records didn’t indicate attorneys for the two.

Authorities say the family has a history with Child Protective Services but have not released details.
