AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Two cities in Alabama have begun collaborating to potentially develop a shared skate park.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports that Opelika and Auburn Mayors Gary Fuller and Bill Ham began discussion about the park after local skaters made requests. The skate park talks have been going on the past two years and now funding is being proposed to help mutually fund the project.

The skate park is projected to cost $400,000.

“We don’t need to build a state park and they build a state park when we could build one together,” Fuller said. “By the two of us going in together, we can have a nice skate park and something that can serve our citizens for years to come.”

The mayors said one of the challenges will be finding a location that is convenient or equally accessible in distance for the park’s construction.

“The city of Auburn enjoys a good working relationship with the city of Opelika,” Ham said. “The most recent scenario that would exemplify that would be the work together at the Barbosal tournament, as we worked together with our resources and personnel to help bring that tournament into fruition for the third year in a row. So this is just another opportunity that we feel like we can pool our resources and serve the needs of our citizens.”

If the budgets are approved, City of Auburn recreation director Becky Richardson says the cities would begin pursuing the project in the fall.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to pool our resources and come up with a good project that the skating communities in Auburn and Opelika can utilize and enjoy,” Richardson said.

Opelika Parks and Recreation director Sam Bailey said the plan for the park is “still fluid.”

“It’s just something both cities have had requests for,” Bailey said. “Becky and I talked about the fact that we had people from both cities wanting this, so we decided it would be best for both cities to work together so we can get a first-class skate park.”
