KETTERING, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a man was shot by police in what started as a traffic stop and has died of his injuries in southwest Ohio.

Kettering Police Chief Chip Protsman said Monday the shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the city about 50 miles (81 kilometers) north of Cincinnati. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died as 33-year-old Jason Hoops, of Fairborn.

Protsman said scanner traffic from the officer involved in the shooting indicated Hoops had a gun in his pocket after he was shot. The chief didn’t confirm or deny witness accounts that a gun was pointed at the officer.

Protsman didn’t provide details about the traffic stop or what prompted it.

The chief says the officer is on administrative leave while the investigation continues
