PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A first wave of Maine residents is heading to Texas to help assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

WGME-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2wCxmgI ) five residents are joining a total of 125 New England Red Cross volunteers to Houston. The hurricane sent heavy rains to the area after it made landfall late Friday as a Category 4 storm.

The volunteers will help people recover from the flood damage that led to thousands of residents fleeing their homes.

The Red Cross has described the relief effort as the largest in more than a decade. Volunteer Ruth Lathrop says more Maine residents are expected to be deployed.

Lathrop says all the help they can get will be needed.
