SHARPSBURG, Ky. (AP) - Police say a man who stabbed a Kentucky state trooper has been fatally shot.

Police said in a statement that Troopers Jason Brown and Thurman Paige were dispatched to Bath County on Sunday evening on a report of a suspicious male and found 34-year-old Dwayne Martin of Sharpsburg. Police say he brandished a knife aggressively toward Brown, who shot him. Police say he then stabbed Brown in the arm and Paige fired his gun, fatally wounding Martin.

The statement says Brown was treated at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington and released.

Police spokesman Scott Ferrell says the troopers were white. He did not know Martin’s race.

He said the shooting remains under investigation.
