PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Blood Center is asking residents to donate blood over the next two weeks to help prevent shortages for the Gulf Coast regions affected by Hurricane Harvey and other centers responding to the need.

RIBC officials say the center has already responded to Texas blood centers by sending 345 donations to the area.

Officials say blood centers in the Gulf Coast region will likely continue to be impacted by not being able to open and run blood collection operations and donors not being able to get to the locations to give.

Rhode Islanders are urged to book an appointment to give at one of RIBC’s six donations centers or at any upcoming blood drive.

RIBC is accepting all blood types, especially type O positive and negative blood types.
