CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Southeast Missouri State University has updated its student code of conduct to better define sexual assault.

University Dean Debbie Below tells the Southeast Missourian that the code’s section pertaining to sexual assault is now separated from the section dealing with general misconduct, including fights and hazing. She says certain definitions have also been revised. They include “complainant” and “accused,” which have been changed to “reporting party” and “responding party.”

Below’s office released a video Aug. 18 called “Incapacitation,” which clarifies what incapacitation is as defined in the code.

The dean says attention was brought to the topic because of more education on sexual violence and students speaking up more. She also says the school saw an increase in the number of cases reported.
