PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Holocaust survivors gathered in Providence on Monday for a memorial ceremony and urged people to never forget the evils of bigotry and hate.

The ceremony was held at the Rhode Island Holocaust Memorial and featured remarks from Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo. Jewish community leaders and chairs of the memorial committee also spoke.

Speaker Herbert Stern says the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia and the New England Holocaust Memorial being vandalized are reasons these memorials are more important than ever.

Raimondo said she was deeply troubled by President Donald Trump’s remarks on Charlottesville and that it is on the community to fight hatred and bigotry.
