PHOENIX (AP) - A Tempe woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years of probation for cruelty to animals.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 20-year-old Tiffany Fajardo was paid to care for six pets last October for one week while a family was out of town.

The family left written detailed instructions for the care of each animal including four older dogs.

On the last day, Fajardo contacted the family to let them know two of the dogs had died of unknown causes.

Prosecutors say when the family returned home, they noticed that none of the animals’ food had been given to them and the surviving dogs needed medical attention.

A veterinary examination of the deceased dogs actually showed they had died days before Fajardo notified the owners.
