Life will soon imitate art, as ESPN announced that its college sports station, ESPNU, will transform (for a day) into “ESPN8: The Ocho” from the 2004 film “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
That’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off.

While “The Ocho” will sadly not feature Jason Bateman and Gary Cole reprising their roles as commentators Pepper Brooks and Cotton McKnight, the exclusive channel promises to feature only the wackiest of athletic competitions.
“For one day only, the faux network will feature a line-up of unconventional sporting events ranging from Disc Golf to Ultimate Trampoline Dodgeball and Firefighters World Challenge playing off the mantra highlighted in the movie: “Bringing You the Finest in Seldom Seen Sports,” ESPN said in a statement.
Featuring events that for the most part have appeared on ESPN networks previously, the schedule also includes other unconventional sports such as roller derby, arm wrestling, and the 2017 Championship of Bags, a cornhole tournament.
While it’s unclear if Average Joe’s gym will serve as a sponsor for the event, it’s certainly a bold strategy for the self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”
