TRACY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say they are investigating the death of an inmate at a state prison in central California as a homicide.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Wednesday that staff at Deuel Vocational Institution found a 34-year-old inmate lying unresponsive in a pool of blood inside the shower.

It says staff transported Andres Cisneros to the treatment and triage area in the men’s prison near Tracy. Cisneros was pronounced dead 30 minutes after he was found Tuesday night.

The department says Cisneros was transferred to the prison from Tulare County on March 19, 2013. He was serving a seven-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence, resulting in great bodily injury.

It says a suspect has not been named.

The prison houses 2,435 inmates.
