RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - It’s about to be open season on digging up wild ginseng in Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Wednesday that harvest season starts Friday and runs through the end of the year.
Wild American ginseng is a threatened species in Virginia and there are prohibitions and restrictions from harvesting it on public lands. Those regulations include replacing each plant with seeds from the one dug.
Last year there were about 2,400 pounds of ginseng roots harvested in Virginia, with a value of about $1 million.
