HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - People in a Mississippi city are mourning the death of a longtime parks and recreation director.

News outlets report that 54-year-old Clemon Terrell died Thursday at his home in Hattiesburg.

Terrell played running back at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1980 to 1983. He had worked 16 years for Hattiesburg parks and recreation.

Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem confirmed his death.

Mayor Toby Barker says Terrell was “a mentor, encourager and friend to so many in Hattiesburg.”
